rhythm and roots
“Rhythm and Roots” is not just a performance, but an interactive educational experience that is fun, engaging and motivational. Louie has presented nearly 200 of these shows at libraries, schools, museums and organizations throughout the region.

Louie Cruz Beltran has been doing something very special in the LA County and Public library systems, also in Kern, Tulare, Fresno and Orange County libraries as well as museums and schools. It is called “Rhythm and Roots.” It is a solo percussion presentation, an interactive, fun and informative exploration of the origins of Afro Cuban andMexican rhythms, and how they made their way into today’s music – Nanigo from Africa, Timba and Guaguanco from Cuba, Cumbia from Colombia, Mambo, Cha Cha and Brazilian Samba. Louie uses humor, a wide variety of authentic and unusual instruments, and a deep understanding of percussion instruments and styles to impart an uplifting message of music education and empowerment through the arts.
Louie demonstrates various rhythms on his congas, and gets audiences to participate by playing an array of unusual percussion instruments, which he discusses. The program is adaptable for all age groups and can be presented in English, Spanish or both.
